Elliot Simpson concert review by Steve Smoliar

Elliot Simpson

  • 2012

Originally from New Mexico, USA, Elliot Simpson completed his Bachelors degree with departmental honors at the San Francisco Conservatory, where he studied with David Tanenbaum, and his Masters degree as soloist and chamber musician at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, where he studied with Zoran Dukic. His Masters degree in The Hague was awarded “with distinction for his extraordinary contribution to new guitar music.” Other teachers have included Sergio Assad, Marc Teicholz, and Baroque guitarist and lutenist Richard Savino. Additionally, Elliot has participated in master classes with Lorenzo Micheli, Paul O’Dette, David Russell, Odair Assad, Fabio Zanon, Antigoni Goni and others.

A prominent proponent of contemporary repertoire for the guitar, Elliot has worked with such acclaimed composers as Sofia Gubaidulina, Michael Finissy, Claudio Baroni, Hugo Morales, and Sahba Aminikia performing world premieres of their works. He has been a guest of such institutions as the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco’s Blueprint series, the György Ligeti Academy, and Amsterdam’s Goethe-Institut. Awards include prizes at the international guitar competitions of Zwolle(NL) and Nordhorn(DE), and the prestigious Huygens Grant from the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. He is a member of the contemporary music group Ensemble Modelo62 and appears with various musicians in performances ranging from early music to atonal improvisation. About a performance alongside guitarists David Tanenbaum, Thomas Villateau, bassist Scott Pingel, and cellist Peter Wyrick, Stephan Smoliar of the San Francisco Examiner wrote: “the resulting web of communication was one of the most fascinating I have experienced in any chamber music performance.”

Recordings include a cd of music by Iranian composer Sahba Aminikia, at the composer’s invitation, and the complete Royal Winter Music sonatas of Hans Werner Henze. He currently lives and teaches privately in The Hague.
